Sanu Tamang (back row – 7th from the left) at the recent Nepali Bible Camp in Port Dickson
Though we are many, we are one body in Christ.
Throughout the Bible, we are taught that God will one day unite people from every tribe, tongue and nation under His rule through His Son, Jesus Christ. To help give some insight on common traits that we share as brothers and sisters in Christ regardless of our background, Keith Tan conducted an interview with Sanu Tamang, a member of the St. Mary’s Nepalese congregation who became a believer about two years ago, and asked her a few questions about her journey and experience in becoming a Christian.
As people living in a world tainted by sin, we have a tendency of looking inwardly at our own lives and struggles. Thus, we may be inclined to think that our situations are unique and that no one can truly understand or relate to us. This misconception can seem even more concrete when we consider people of different ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We might think that they have very little – if anything at all – in common with us.
However, the truth is that we are all people trying to get by in this life, sinners staggering under the weight of vices and temptations, and saved by the gracious sacrifice of Jesus, who died on the cross for us all. Our hope is that Sanu Tamang’s testimony may encourage people to embrace unity in Christ with fellow believers and celebrate the diversity between us.
- What did you believe in before you became a Christian?
Like most Nepalese, I was brought up to be a follower of the Hindu religion before I came to know and accept Jesus Christ into my life. - What events or experiences led you to receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?
It happened during the CNY2014 Evangelistic service which I attended at the invitation of a housemate two years ago. There was a screening of the movie “The Passion of the Christ”, followed by a sermon. It was there that I became convicted to follow Jesus. - Do you still face challenges living as a Christian in this world? What are they?
Yes, the biggest one for me is to overcome the temptation of reverting to my old self while striving to live a new life in Christ. - What is your hope for life and the future in light of your newfound faith in Christ?
My hope is to gain eternal life in Christ.
