As a Cathedral community we are seeking to grow together into the likeness of Christ. An important part of this is growing in our love for one another and for those around us. And part of that is showing special love to our brothers and sisters with disabilities. Doulos Lee shares his experience of the Cheshire Home ministry.
As a Cathedral, we have been privileged to be involved in Cheshire Home for many years. Located in Selayang, Cheshire Home is a rehabilitational, residential care and training centre for people with disabilities. It is a non-profit organisation that provides care for people from all races and religions. There are a number of residents who are Christians or who are interested in knowing more about the gospel.
A team from the Cathedral visits the home once a month. We lead the residents who come forward in a service with Scripture reading and teaching, singing, prayers, and, on occasions, the Lord’s Supper. The session is always interactive, with the residents participating fully. We enjoy a good time of fellowship together.
In addition, residents from Cheshire Home join us once a month at the Cathedral for Sunday church. This provides us with a greater opportunity to show them love and to receive love from them. Their physical challenges mean that we need to be proactive to approach and engage in conversations to encourage them.
The Dataran Merdeka Growth Group (a small group from SMACC2) that I lead, visited Cheshire Home a few times this year and group members shared how they have been blessed by the residents’ enthusiasm, passion and heart for the Gospel: “It was a great blessing to be able to talk to them who so openly share their heart and struggles, both physically and spiritually. The residents may have various physical disabilities, but it does not stop them from following Christ ever so fervently.”
We thank God for the believers in Cheshire Home who are part of our Cathedral family and continue to keep them in our prayers, thoughts and actions. Let us pray for more opportunities to love and serve them as we share life together.
