Inviting Others to Know Christ

Two members of the Cathedral share their testimonies with Stanley Lee on how evangelistic events in church have helped them in their journey to be Christians.

St Mary’s Cathedral hosts a variety of evangelistic events throughout the year which provide opportunities for non-Christians to know more about Christianity and Jesus. Through God’s sovereignty, some of them will eventually come to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

However, inviting a friend to church for an event or service can sometimes be difficult for some Christians. There are worries about rejection and negative reaction from the person who is being invited. Some Christians are discouraged from trying again because their friends do not seem to indicate any further interest after attending one event or service.

Ever wondered what is the perspective of a person being invited to an evangelistic event?

Vicky Wong and Jasmine Lee are among some of the people who responded to Christ after attending an evangelistic event that was held in St Mary's Cathedral. These are their stories:

Vicky’s Story
For Vicky, the first evangelistic event which she attended brought the issue of spirituality back to the forefront and she made the decision to restart the journey that had been on a stop-start mode since the early 90’s to find out more about Christianity.

She was invited by a family member to attend a church event when she was a non-Christian and she responded by accepting the invitation with an open mind. Since then, Vicky has attended several events organised by the Cathedral such as the Cathedral Christmas Guest Night and ‘The God Who Is There’ series by Don Carson.

She started coming to a church service after the Church Camp to find more about what life as a believer would entail. It came to a point later where she accepted Christ into her life and placed her trust in Him. Vicky pointed out that the Church events and the people who played a role in running these events as a whole, were great enablers who contributed to her acceptance of Christ.

Jasmine’s Story
Jasmine was invited to the Cathedral Christmas Guest Night in early December 2011 by Indran, a fellow colleague who is a member of SMACC 1. Indran’s Christ-like attitude at work prompted Jasmine and her then boyfriend, now husband, to accept the invitation. Before attending the event, Jasmine and her husband also made an effort to research about St. Mary’s Cathedral.

During the Christmas Guest Night, Jasmine felt very welcomed by the friends which Indran introduced to her. She particularly remembered Marianne because she was very outgoing and took time to speak to her. According to her, all these gestures do make a difference to someone who is new to a place. She also found Rev Dr Andrew Cheah’s explanation of ‘Two Ways to Live’ by Matthias Media particularly useful.

A few weeks later, Jasmine accepted Christ as her Lord and Saviour during a Christmas service in Singapore. The seed which was planted during the Christmas Guest Night thus came to fruition.

Jasmine began her journey as a Christian by attending SMACC 1. She is thankful to the church team members who were present during the events she attended to answer her questions. She hopes that members of the Cathedral will continue to be encouraged to welcome guests and new members in the Cathedral as these efforts make new members feel more comfortable and provide them with a sense of belonging to the Christian community.

These testimonies by Vicky and Jasmine are some examples of lives which have been transformed by Christ through a simple gesture of invitation.

Do invite your friends to the next round of evangelistic events organized by the Cathedral and you’ll be amazed to see how God works in your friends lives!
