According to Tim Nicholls, from our pastoral team, “The Kids’ Church ministry is one that deserves significant investment in our Cathedral. Every week, there are 75-100 kids who gather for the English Sunday School, plus nearly more than 40 for the BM and Iban Sunday Schools. Our goal at Kids’ Church is to see every child grow up to know and love Jesus as their own personal Lord and Saviour and desire to serve Him in their lives.” Read on to find out more.
The Gospel is the glorious Good News that Christ died as our Saviour and rose again as our Lord. It’s a message so simple, it can be grasped from the earliest of age, and so magnificent that it can be explored for all of life. In many churches, Sunday School is seen as nothing more than a babysitting service, a place for children to play games and do colouring in, or a place to learn Bible stories. But knowing that this glorious Gospel is for everyone, including children, our goal at Kids’ Church is to see every child grow up to know and love Jesus as their own personal Lord and Saviour and desire to serve Him in their lives.
Of course, this is not a task we engage in alone. Our Kids’ Church team knows that the primary responsibility for bringing up children to know the Lord lies with their parents, and particularly their fathers (Eph. 6:4). We strive therefore to support parents in this great task of bringing up their children to know Christ. Not only is this reflected in how we teach the children on Sundays, but also in how we seek to equip parents to share the gospel with their children outside the classroom throughout the week.
For the English Sunday School, there are four levels – a crèche for the young kids aged 0-2, and then classes for 3-5s, 6-8s, and 9-12s for the older children. Each class is taught by a group of committed and godly teachers, who undergo regular monthly training that they may faithfully discharge the awesome responsibility they have to teach God’s Word to the children in a way that is Gospel-centred, Bible-based, God-glorifying, and fun as well! We are constantly surprised and encouraged by how much the kids grasp, not only in their heads, but in their hearts. Outside of Sunday – we seek to help the children to play their part in the wider life of the church through regular kids’ presentations, picnics, and other activities.
The children we teach will grow up to be the next generation of church leaders – ministers, evangelists, Bible study leaders, youth group leaders, and Kids’ Church teachers. Let’s pray that each one will indeed grow up to know and love Christ personally, and desire to serve Him in their lives.
Kids’ Church runs concurrently with the 10.30am services in the Cathedral. Find out more at www. stmaryscathedral.org.my/kidschurch
