Tuesday Night Training

TNT is a quietly explosive way of equipping ourselves for good works, as Gregory Kong explains.

St. Paul reminds his protégé Timothy that the Bible is divinely inspired, and useful so that we can be made complete, prepared to do every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17). As part of our ongoing mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ, St. Mary’s Cathedral is committed to the biblical training of individuals and groups through our Tuesday Night Training (TNT) sessions. Each of the 3 TNT semesters/terms offer both Theological Training courses as well as Ministry Skills courses. There’s bound to be a course for you.

Theological Training modules help equip people to better handle God’s Word.  The modules cover biblical theology, key doctrines, books of the Bible as well as church history.  This range of subjects promotes a wider understanding of Scripture and there are three levels to allow students to progress.  These modules are part of the Moore Theological College distance education programme which is made available locally through Equip Gospel Ministries. Students who opt to take exams for the modules can put these towards a certificate in theology.

Ministry Skills modules are structured to help us grow in confidence and in our ability to share and serve the Gospel.  Some modules are also designed to provide Christian insights into various aspects of life, such as marriage, parenting and conflict resolution whilst others help us to answer tough questions about Christianity, better serve the church, and share the Gospel with our non-Christian relatives, friends and colleagues. Is there an area that you would like to be better equipped in? Do let us know and we will see how we can help to support you in this area.

As the Revelation to John points out, in the age to come, “people from every nation, tribe, people and tongue” (Rev. 7:9) will stand before God, praising and glorifying His Name.

The Iban and BM congregations jointly hold training sessions on Saturdays in what we call the Sekolah Latihan Pemuridan dan Kepimpinan (Leadership and Discipleship Training School). Started by Rev. Iben, 2 modules are currently running over the year: SLPK2 (meant for new leaders although some youngsters and newcomers come as well) which is Bible-based and Gospel centred in outreach, with 6 modules conducted by Frankie Lim (BM) and Pr. John Layang (Iban); and SLPK4 (to build leaders e.g. lay readers and other ministries) which is more deeply theological, with 8 modules conducted by Rev. Iben (combined BM and Iban).

Term 3 starts in September and the courses on offer are Bible Overview, Prayer Book, Christian Worship, Reformation Church History, Old Testament 3.

So why attend these courses? The courses enable us to be trained so that, equipped by God’s Word, we can serve Him better in the Cathedral and beyond. They enable us to grow in the knowledge of God’s truth and our skills for ministry.

Above all, through the opening of God’s Word via the TNT courses, we are given the opportunity to get to know our God more intimately. The God whom we worship and adore has revealed Himself to us in His Word. As we study and obey his Word together we learn to appreciate, love and serve him more.
